Out-of-towners capture Spring Break 16-18 golf titles
Out-of-towners Eduardo Figueroa of Naples and Anna Bohmer of Cali, Colombia, beat Plantation American Heritage student Kristian Capparos and Carrollton student Julie Steinbauer, respectively, to win the oldest age-group titles at this week’s Spring Break Golf Classic.
Figueroa shot a pair of 67s on the International Links Miami-Melreese Golf Course to win by 12 strokes over Capparos, who rebounded from a first-round, 5-over-par 76 to shoot a 1-under 70 and zip up to second place with a 4-over 146 total. One stroke behind Capparos, Pembroke Pines’ Jesse Perkins and Weston’s Michael Perez tied for third.
The aforementioned boys were in the 16-18 age group. First among the Boys’ 14-15 class was Sunny Isles’ Alejandro Perazzo, firing a second-round 75 for a 12-over 154. Perazzo’s 75 was five shots better than the second-best round in the class, the 80 by first-round leader Kyle Eckhardt of Cooper City, who finished second by four strokes. Miami’s Michael Carter (20-over 162) was third in the class.
Key Biscayne’s A.J. Sardina won the Boys’ 10-11 class by three strokes over West Palm Beach’s Derek Raymond with a 165 total.
Only one stroke separated Bohmer and Steinbauer in the Girls’ 16-18 class, 157 to 158, after Bohmer’s second-round 78 (from the white tees) was three shots better than Steinbauer’s 81. Palm Beach Gardens’ Annie Dulman moved up to third with her 78.
Bohmer told Jim Montgomery of The First Tee Miami she would definitely be back for the Doral-Publix Junior tournament and the Orange Bowl.
In the Girls’ 14-15 class, Plantation’s Marisa Messana fired twin 78s for a 156, four shots better than Miami’s Jamee Friedman. Boca Raton’s Camilla Mazzola was third with a 166.
The 164 by Wellington’s Mary Janiga from the red tees beat Miami’s Cassandra Chen by three strokes and Miami’s Michelle Rodriguez by 11 strokes in the Girl’ 12-13 class.
Celebrity event
Considering the small gatherings trailing the Saturday pair of world No. 1 Martin Kaymer and WGC-Cadillac Championships first- and second-round leader Hunter Mahan, perhaps local sports fans would consider the field at the 2011 Canon Florida Golf Classic Celebrity Weekend benefitting the Nat Moore Foundation to be deeper in star power.
Dan Marino, Larry Little, Moses Malone, Rollie Fingers and Pierre Larouche are among the athletes who will be among the 70 celebrities at Saturday’s celebrity gala party and auction, Sunday’s Celebrity Corporate Skins Game and Monday’s Celebrity Golf Tournament on the Blue and Gold courses at Doral Resort & Spa. There also will be a junior golf clinic Saturday.
The Nat Moore Foundation, named after the former Dolphins wide receiver and current Dolphins vice president, provides scholarships and assistance to disadvantaged youth in South Florida. For more information on how to attend, call Gillian Moxey at the foundation at 305-770-0995.
