Glastonbury Schools To Offer 20 Summer Camps

The school system is offering 20 tuition-based summer camps in 2012.

The camps, which have been offered in the past and will be offered again this summer, include: "Bridge to chem­istry" for students en­tering the ninth-grade; "Preparing for AP biology" for students in AP biology; "Summer sci­ence camp" for students en­tering grades 4-7; "Com­put­er time" for students en­tering grades 4-7; "Writing to success" for students en­tering grades 4-6; "Summer prose" for students en­tering grades 6-9; "Reading enrich­ment camp" for students en­tering grades 5-8; "Tom­ahawk train­ing camp" for students en­tering grades 9-12; and "Summer chess camp" for students en­tering grades 2-12.

The school system also offers for­eign language camps, including: "French summer camp" for students en­tering grades 3-6; "En­glish language learners summer camp" for students en­tering grades 1-5; "Latin summer camp" for students en­tering grades 6-8; "Span­ish summer camp" for students en­tering grades 2-5; "Ch­inese camp" for students en­tering grades 2-6; and "Russian camp" for students en­tering grades 3-6.

Sev­eral new camps will be offered this year. "Bird sleuth" will pro­vide students en­tering grades 4-6 the ba­sics of bird­ing at and around Nayaug El­e­mentary School including setting up sci­ence experi­ments, us­ing bird feed­ers and taking photographs. "Gideon Welles summer book club" is for chil­dren en­tering the sixth grade. The camp will help with student's summer reading as­sign­ments.

"Bring­ing books to life through play" is for students en­tering first and sec­ond-grade. The camp will help chil­dren read age-appropriate books togeth­er and explore char­ac­ters, themes and concepts through phys­ical activ­ities. Oth­er new camps include "Summer jump rope" for students en­tering grades 4-8 and "Summer game club" for students who love board games and are en­tering grades 5-8.

The camps are self-support­ing and designed and fa­cili­tated by the school system's staff. There is no cost to the board of ed­ucation and tuition for each camp covers costs of teach­er salar­ies and supplies. The for­eign language camps are funded through the Al­ternative Route to Certification program and through grants.
