Collision in downtown Des Moines leaves SUV upside down
Des Moines police will review recordings of a red-light camera at Ninth Street and Grand Avenue to determine the cause of an accident at the intersection Friday morning.
The accident occurred around 8:35 a.m. It involved a Chevy Blazer that flipped onto its top and a Nissan Xterra that received heavy front-end damage.
Melissa Carter, who was walking to work at ING, said she saw the Blazer roll twice and hit a light pole.
"It flipped in the air twice. I have never seen anything like it," Carter said. "I do not know how (the driver) did it, but she crawled out on all fours."
The driver of the Blazer was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. She had minor injuries, Des Moines Police Officer Ross Klein said. The name of the driver was not available.
Tammy Taylor, the driver of the Xterra, appeared uninjured. She left the scene with a friend.
Taylor was traveling south on Ninth and the driver in the Blazer was traveling west on Grand. Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Scott said preliminary reports indicate the driver in the Blazer ran the red light, causing the two vehicles to collide.
Carter sat outside in the cold with Taylor while she waited for a friend to pick her up.
"I'm shaking because I feel so scared for everyone," Carter said.
