COLLEYVILLE -- St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church opened last weekend, and the celebration included performances by church choirs, a theatrical show and a visit from Bishop Youssef of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Southern United States.

The new church, which seats 400, is designed in the shape of a cross with a dome and bell tower. For the consecration, the church had overflow seating for the more than 550 people who attended.

The $2.5 million church, at 1110 John McCain Road, was funded by the congregation's 185 families. Future plans include classrooms and an administration building. The old chapel will remain for midweek services and events.

"Many congregation members contributed their time, expertise in architecture, engineering, and project management to get us to this point," said Awad Eskander, a member of the church and CEO of Paradigm Architects. -- Star-Telegram
